To gain control and ensure the success of his establishment, Raffles met with many problems and obstacles along the way.
The first step was to get the Sultan to sign the treaty to allow him to start a settlement there, but the current Sultan was being controlled by the Dutch and did not allow Raffles to start a settlement. Raffles was told by the Temenggong that Tengku Hussein was the rightful heir to the throne but as he was not present when their father died, his younger brother was made the sultan. Raffles then went to find him and together, they signed the treaty.
However, the Dutch was angry , claiming that Singapore was theirs, the British were also angry with Raffles for creating a dispute. As both companies did want to have war, they managed to sign a treaty after some negotiation, allowing the British to keep Singapore.
